Hapy New Year everyone. I am writing in hopes of finding my
biological father. I was born Lynn Alison Heiberg, to Wanda Beryl
Heiberg, nee Gough on August 17th, 1961 in Sudbury, Ont. I do know that
my father is of Algonquin descent. Whe I was 6 or 7 & living in Turner
Valley, Alberta(1967/68), I recall my father coming to the house &
argueing with my mother about me. He wanted to take me with him. I did
get to spend some time with him & his other children as he treated us to
an ice cream cone at the local confectionary store. he, his wife &
children were staying in a teepee at the top of the 'flats'. I also know
that I am somehow related to a Lang family of Algonquin descent. Because
I know have a grand daughter, it has become extremely important that I
find my father &/or siblings so that I may be able to pass my peoples'
history, culture & traditions on to her. Creator, please hear my prayer.

What a lovely site!!! I grew up in Powassan and North Bay. At that
time my parents owned a camp on Lake Genesse and a hundred acres
surrounding it. At one point we ran a girls camp......I often wonder
what happened to that very secluded area. I have never gone back for
fear i would be very dissapointed. Sometimes good memories should remain
that. Do you know if that area has changed a great deal. regards,

My name is Angele Janveau and my father was donald Janveau and my
mother Claire St. jean. I remember Kiosk a little different then
everyone else because we were one of the last faimlies to leave. My
cusins shawn and jason joduin were the last to leave. I remember the
school and the fun time we had there at christmas when everyone in the
town got together to celibrate. I remember my mom running the post
office. I remember the bus ride i had to take to mattawa when they
closed the schools down, the play house we had in the back yard, the
train track in the back yard, the lake where there was a slimmy log were
it got deep. I remember every little detail like it were yesterday. My
father was apointed mayor of Kiosk but my mom say it was because he was
friends with everyone in the town. but the mill burnt down and the town
went under from there. there was no work no schools and buisness were
closeing fast . The goverment was buy ut land and say it was know part
of the nationa par! k so everyone had to leave. Every summer a family
from kiosk I only know them from there daughter robin but they try and
get everyone to pay for a reunion. That is not how it should work we all
have different memories that come from kiosk and they all came to me
free so why can't they just see. We all should get together to remember
the times. Meet new extentions of family and the old. Gettng together to
remember a place is the best way to keep that place still alive. That is
the way I feel any ways after my father Donald Joesph Janveau past away.
Leaving me to remember all the special time we spent on the water front
fishing. I still have my dads secret fishing map of all kiosk area just
wait I'll catch that big one soon. well that is what is on my mind
memories so I say good luck to anyone that is looking for information on
my home town. It is a challenge but it is worth it in the end love a
true kioskian Angele Janveau

I spent the first 18 years of my life in Temiscaming. My father,

spent summers at our various cottages--MeWaPaNee, le Corbeau, Hunters
Point, and on Jawbone Bay. I haven't been back to Temiscaming since 1965

It is good to know more about the railway-story of Algonquin Park.
When I was the first time in Kiosk (northern Algonquin Park) I was 6
years old (now I am 18) and I remember well the sound of this train in
the nights.
The railway-tracks are made off now, but the bridge is still there
and the youth likes to jump of it into the lake. When you go there now,
it still smells like train because of the oil, wich is still there on
the bridge.
In two weeks I will go to Lake Kioshkokwi again for 5 weeks to visit
my 2nd family there. I have to practise a bit on my English, because I
am from Germany and have 5 hours English a week in school there! Manuel

I thank you so much for bringing the history of Klocks mill and
Mattawa to life. Since I was a child,I heard stories about the french
and finnish (Janveau/Boivin/Laframboise) relatives that lived in Mattawa.
Years ago, I took a trip and searched the area, its back roads, the
library for any clues to these places they had mentioned, but all I
could find were grave stones. You have captured so many of the stories
that I heard but in words that I will remember forever. Thank you so
much. Without your articles, a great deal of the history about the
common working class settlers would have stayed buried or died forever.
Please don't stop the good work. To everyone in your articles who took
the time to tell their stories, I also thank. We should be proud of our

In the summer of 1972 I worked as a Parks Planner for the old Dept of
Lands and Forests on a Conservation Survey for the soon-to-be
established NBMCA (Sept 72). After some discussions with the late Sam
Jacks of the City Parks and Rec department, and a Mr. Bourne of
Planning, I was encouraged to research and write up a feasibility report
on the designation and restoration of the portage. (I have no idea if
this draft report was ever forwarded to the Conservation Authority by
Lands and Forests.)
We even went in to the CIL dynamite plant which I recall was on or
close by the route, and spoke with the plant manager, who was concerned
about security and the potential for (FLQ) terrorist breakins or worse
if portagers were allowed through their property!

Had just finished reading Three Day Road and was looking into Peggy's
life. What an amazing man, and he certainly was not alone in his support
of the Empire in WW1. I have read that many aboriginal nations sent
every available able bodied man, to the extent that some reserves only
had several old men and a few lads remaining. And then to be treated so
unfairly after the war. My studies of the 21st Btn CEF revealed another
amazing sniper by the name of Johnson Paudash of the Mississaugas of

book "General Stores of Canada" Growing up in the North Bay area, I
remember as a child visiting general stores in Redbridge, Feronia and

for pop bottles off the docks at the Harbour or Trout Lake Marina
(Tupper's) and turn them in at the store for a little bit of change

stories which bring back a lot of memories. Cheers from the Georgian

I have been a First Nations wannabe for most of my 56 years. Archie
Beleny's story really hit a chord and, of course, being a woman, I was
then led to Anahareo. I maintain a small woodlot in the Finger Lakes
region of NY. I live in a barn and deal with my own set of primitive
technologies. Archie is no scam artist in my book. His real work was
conservation and he did it well. Different writers say he died because
he couldn't bear the shame of exposure of his English heritage. I'm sure
a good publisist could have turned it around for him, but Anahareo was
able to take up where he left off and as so much water flows down from
Canada into the US I can only guess as to how fortunate we all are for
both of them. Without him, would we have listened to her. After all, so
many First Nations people have begged us to consider the damage we have
done to the environment. MY children are both tree huggers and my son's
father's family has genuine Apache roots. MY son's father t! he late R
Charles Ringsmuth was a great artist. He was scorned by indians however
because his "Tribute to Wounded Knee" was too bloody for them. I guess,
not having been there, they missed the point.
Anyway, I loved reading everything I could find about Anahareo and
thank you for your gift.

I was employed in J R Booth Camp #1 Madawaska 1933-4, at age 21 I was

assigned to a hill gang preparing the base for the horse drawn loads
waiting at the top for the signal to proceed down after ribbons of dry
sand or hay had been strategically placed across the steepest parts.
between loads we cut wood for the pit in which a fire was started at
day's end to dry more sand for the next day's run down. I assumed the
teams came from nearby farms along with their drivers as I could not
imagine any driver risking his neck with an unfamiliar team on them thar
mini-mountains !!! I just discovered this site this morning, so have not
had a chance to read other comments; perhaps more later.

Very interesting site, Doug. As a former North Bayite it brings back
a lot of memories. BTW, I'm looking for a picture of a fire tower
located in Widdifield Township from the early 50s when it was a wooden
tower not the later steel tower I climbed as a kid (my aunt worked for
Lands & Forests). It was located off Tower Drive (naturally. Cheers

I have a great appreciation for your column and the amount of work it
takes to put it together. Researching my own family history in this
area with the early involvement in Nipissing Village of Gilbert
McEachern,
my great grand father and Angus McEachern my great grand uncle back in
the 1880's and 1890's taught me how time consuming research can be and
yet somehow so enjoyably addictive. Thanks Doug for your body of work
and contribution to our understanding of local history.

I am writing a histroy of the CPR line running from Mattawa to
Angeliers. this of course starts with the Oblate Fathers and Father
Paradis and the Lake Temiskaming Colonization Railway and the current
ending ? seems to be with the Ottawa Valley Rail Link doing the Tembec
turn. Like Leo Morel, I want to use Wilson MacDonald's M'sieu as a front
piece since my history is about wandering North on a road out of Mattawa.
I was looking where to go for permission to use this poem and came
across your page. Being a native of Mattawa, grew up there in the 40s &
50s, I have a soft spot for the town. I enjoyed visiting it again
through your site. Your references to Len Selle, Gordon Dufoe, brought
back memories. My mother painted with Gordon and they made many trips
into the bush looking for subjects to paint. I have a few of his
paintings hanging in my home.
I have enjoyed your site , what I have covered so far, and will
continue to go through it and visit often.
Thank you.

Doug, I have just read your article dated April 1,
2005. I was in Muskoka on June 19 when I purchased a copy of Scott D.
Shipman's revised edition of English Bloods, by Frederick de la Fosse. I
have know about this story for some time, but since the original volume
was published in 1930, it was listed in the rare book catagory and I
have only been able to read excerpts of it that have been published
elswhere. Mr. Shipman has put a lot of additional research into this
revised edition an it is worth every cent of the purchase price.
As you know I am more interested in railway history
of this region, there has been very little information written about
that through the North Muskoka and Almaguin region. I was at Ontario
Archives a few years ago researching a file on the Ontario & Pacific
Jct. Railway proposed to be built through this region in the 1870's. A
letter in that file, sent to the government, urging their support of the
project, was signed by Fred de la Fosse and others. This is part of a
well known story that has been told over and over again. The Ontario &
Pacific Jct. was never built, but in its place the Northern & Pacific
Jct. was constructed and the town of Huntsville prospered while
Hoodstown died.
While I don't get as much of a chance to get to the
Archives as I used to, I know your son Paul has been dedicated to that
research, now that Mr. Shipman has joined the line up to the micro-film
reader, I hope others will get in on the research. There is a lot of
history out there, just waiting to be uncovered.

I came upon this site by searching for the History of Sturgeon Falls,
& very interesting it is. I grew up in Crystal Falls, where the
generating staiton is, there were only 5 homes in there. My family lived
there for more than 30yrs. & my Father worked for Ontario Hydro.
(Charlie iacovone) The colony as they called it was totally closed down
as to living in there, only the generating station remains and is run
from North Bay. The homes were all sold off & moved out, I have many
good memories of living in there as a child. Would be nice to see a
story on Crystal Falls,Ontario. Keep up the good work it is nice to see
& hear about the North. I also have family in Powassan & am familiar
with that area as well. Thanks & all the best...Glenda

with the Cameron Township Finns. Your article brought back many
childhood memories and fond rememberances of old friends and relatives.
Thank you for your kind words about my Mom and Uncle Jules. As you may
be very aware, my Mom is a very dynamic and sharp minded lady and a
cherished member of our family. She has what Finns call "SISU", roughly
translated means " Guts" or the will to never give up. She's one in a
million ! Again Thank you and have an enjoyable Christmas. Regards:

Very interesting sight .I just finished reading White Hurricane. So
many people do not realise the history of the lakes we live on ( I live
in Chicago ). I have driven to Huron, Michigan, and Superior. I also own
a library of books and post cards on ships/history.I own the two
Fitzgerald prints by Colnkin autographed by Gordon Lightfoot. I also
extensively flyfish them. There is just so much to be learned about
them....

All your columns are so interesting to anyone even remotely connected
to the Nipissing area. I eagerly await each new addition.
Coincidentally, I had just been reviewing a memoir my mother wrote (with
a paragraph on "The Hunt") this morning. The photos in "Oh Deer" were
very evocative of her story and her pictures. It is incredible how so
many of the men look alike. Then when I opened your Nov 5 column, there
was mention of Bessie Beatty Gill who certainly deserved recognition for
her service to the community. Her ancestor Elizabeth McMullan Beatty was
sister of two other pioneer women --- Mary McMullan Armstrong and (my
direct ancestor) Margaret McMullan Floyd Barr who were pioneers at
Nipissing village in the 1860s. Thank you so much for continuing these
valuable columns. Eileen

Times change, but I appear to be stuck in the mud of 30 years ago.
Reading some of your articles made me look out at the water, and really
miss seeing "the mountain" on fire with fall maples, over Ronnie
Ringlers barn. I am totally homesick for a place I lived in part-time.
The Mick family is coming back! Watch for the new house, 1/4 mile east
of Boundary road. I will be there, come summer. Thanks again Doug! Ian

I am doing some research on my father, Douglas Charles Peeler, who
served in the Algonquin Militia. Yours is the first line of information
I have been able to find. I hope to be able to complete our story of my
Father's service to his country with this informatiion. I do have some
pictures, but Dad's memory isn't what it used to be and we can not put
names to a lot of the faces. There is the reunion in Holland this month
and my parents are going over taking everything I have managed to put
together at this time. We would really like to know if there is anyone
else from Ontario who may know my Father and is going to Holland this
month. If anyone out there would like to share information, or know my
Dad, please email me and I will make sure he gets the contact. Thank
you, very much. S.Ceaser

Hi! I visited your site while "googling" info on Wilson Macdonald. He
and my great-grandfather were first cousins, so originally my interest
was strictly genealogical, but I have since purchased a couple of his
books, and I find I really enjoy his work. As all genealogists are wont
to say, I wish I'd pursued my interest when I was younger, when I might
have talked to the fellow directly. Of course, he was not too fond of
the Pugsley side of the family, as I understand! Thanks for including
him. Cheers! Susan Pugsley Boon Orangeville, Ontario

iI just read your page on Austin Airways and enjoued it very much.
Being native of Sudbury, as a young boy I remember seeing and hearing
daily aircraft. especially the DeHavilland Beaver takng off from Ramsey
lake. Also my father in his younger days had worked for Austin Airways
here. He described in detail the Norsmen aircraft as he had helped in
the rebuilding and repairing of them. Also he had the honor of flying
with Rusty Blakney a few times. This man was probably the best ever bush
pilot. Again thank you.

We were surprised and delighted to find your book on the general
stores of Canada however we were dissapointed in the fact that our store
which has operated since 1874 was not mentioned especially seeing as how
you live in such close proximity to us.If you know of any general stores
that are of the same vintage as the Rosseau General Store and are still
opperating as a general store we would like to know about them. We are
always interested in visiting other stores to get ideas for our store,
to keep in character with the history behind the looks and operation of
the old general store. Most recently we visited the Badjeros General
Store in Badjeros Ontario which was built around 1886 and were surprised
to see how similar in construction and operation that it was to ours.Any
information on other stores that you could pass on to us would be
greatly appreciated.

Recently I recived my grandfather's photo albums. One in particular
caught my attention. It contained several dozen unlabled pictures he had
taken during the time he spent working for the Pine Lake Lumber Co. of
Pickerel. The family history has him moving from Qubec in 1922 to work
in the French River area. He stayed ther until the company was sold at
which time he moved to Hamilton ON. When we where children he would tell
us stories from his time in the bush. In trying to determain the
location of the photos I have found your articals extreamly usfull in
understanding the area and some of the history. I will probably not be
able to put names to all the places and people. It has been fun doing
the reserch and in a sence reliving what my grandfather described as
some of the best days of his life. Thank you for your help.
