Restoule boasts miniature replica of pioneer village
|
RESTOUL'S NEW PIONEER VILLAGE
A new brochure "Six Great Reasons to Come to Restoule" lists the Maple
Hill Pioneer Village as a new attraction. This authentic miniature replica
of a pioneer village from the 1800s is highly educational and entertaining.
It was designed and built by Ron Roy and his wife Sandra on Lake Commanda.
Ron is the former manager of the wood shop at the North Bay and Area Association
for Community Living at F.J. Dellandrea Place for many years.
I recently attended the official opening of the Roy's exhibit, and thoroughly
enjoyed the walk through the "village" (see photo). There are scale models
with approproate landscaping for eleven buildings with several others,
including a sawmill, planned for the future. Other visitors, especially
the children, were fascinated with this step back in time.
Ron and Sandra produce a variety of wooden craft items, including toys,
birdhouses, and novelties. Items from other crafts people including ceramics
from their daughter Shelly, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, will
be on sale.

CALLANDER BOATING HERITAGE DAYS EXHIBITION LAUNCHED
Callander Boating Heritage Days Exhibition Launched The Callander Bay
Heritage Museum opened its new exhibition, Boating Heritage Days, on June
7th. Numerous paintings, photographs and artefacts on boating have been
tastefully displayed in their large new exhibition space. This and their
permanent display in the Dr. Dufoe House are well worth a visit. Pick up
a copy of the beautiful souvenir boat show poster featuring a painting
of the Seagull II and Capt. "Mac" Masson by John Seguin.
The recent opening took the opportunity to recognize the upcoming 90th
birthday of Stan Darling, six-time Federal Member of Parliament who was
born in the Dufoe house. Greetings to Stan were read from Mike Harris,
Bob Wood, etc., and North Himsworth Reeve Hec Lavigne and Stan rang the
ship bell from the old steamer Seagull I (1906-1930) to officially open
the boat show.
MRS. ED McBETH DIES AT AGE 105
Mrs. Ed McBeth dies at Age 105 By coincidence, on the same day of the
boat show opening, former Callander resident, Alice Elizabeth McBeth, died
at age 105 in Mississauga. She was the wife of Ed McBeth, the former Superintendent
of the John B. Smith Lumber Company in Callander. Her husband worked for
Smith for 43 years, and the McBeths were an active family in the community
through those years.
